It is free to use the Record Office and you do not need to book. You will need a ticket to gain access to the searchrooms. We issue two types of tickets: CARN tickets and day tickets.
CARN ticket (County Archive Research Network)
Those who intend to visit the office regularly should register for a CARN ticket. These are free and are valid for four years and will give you access to any record office that belongs to the research network.
You will need to bring identification with proof of your name and current address and signature to have a ticket issued. A list of acceptable forms of identification is given below.
Please Note: the CARN system will end shortly and we will keep you updated on the replacement Archives Card. In the meantime we are continuing to issue and accept all valid CARN tickets.
These are for visitors who are not undertaking on-going research and do not require a CARN ticket. You will need to bring identification with proof of your name and current address.
Acceptable forms of identification for CARN or Day Tickets:
- Driver’s licence
- Utility bill (current)
- Council Tax bill/Council rent book
- Medical card (with address)
- Bank statement
- Vehicle Registration document
- Official letter
If providing suitable identification is a problem for you please contact the office using the details below.
We aim to help everyone to use our services and to ensure that lack of identification is not a barrier to access.
For security reasons, bags are not allowed into the searchrooms. Lockers are available (free) for secure storage of your belongings.
If you are travelling from outside of Leicestershire or Rutland you may book a microfilm/fiche reader or computer by telephoning the office in advance of your visit.
