The Record Office has reopened on Mondays and at lunchtimes. Last entry on Wednesdays is 5.00pm and we are also open on only two Saturdays per month. Please see 'Visit Us' or the bottom of each page for our full opening hours.

Admission and Tickets

It is free to use the Record Office and you do not need to book.

You will need a reader’s ticket to gain access to the searchrooms. Although the CARN system has ended, we are still accepting valid existing CARN tickets. The replacement Archives Card will be introduced soon. Alternatively, we will issue you with a Day Ticket for which identification is required.

Please bring proof of your name and current address and signature. The following forms of identification are acceptable:

  • Driving licence
  • Utility bill (current)
  • Council Tax bill/Council rent book
  • Medical card (with address)
  • Bank statement
  • Vehicle Registration document
  • Official letter

If providing suitable identification is a problem for you please contact the office using the details below.

We aim to help everyone to use our services and to ensure that lack of identification is not a barrier to access.

For security reasons, bags are not allowed into the searchrooms. Lockers are available (free) for secure storage of your belongings.

If you are travelling from outside of Leicestershire or Rutland you may book a microfilm/fiche reader or computer by telephoning the office in advance of your visit.
