Information on visiting The Record Office from 19th July 2021
We are looking forward to welcoming more people back to the Record Office. However the health & wellbeing of visitors and staff remain our key priority. We are therefore taking a more gradual approach to lifting our Covid safety measures. We continue to encourage the use of face coverings for visitors and staff. Visits are still by pre-booking only although unlimited items can now be ordered on demand again. Please see 'Book Your Visit' on our home page for revised booking procedures. Thank you for your patience whilst we implement our gradual reopening plan. UPDATE: The Record Office will be open on SATURDAY mornings 21 August, 4 September and 18 September. We will be CLOSED FOR STOCKTAKING from 25 September to 9 October (inclusive).
It is free to use the Record Office but pre-booking is now required. Please see details of our new booking system.
You will need a ticket to gain access to the searchrooms. Although the CARN system has ended, we are still accepting valid existing CARN tickets. The replacement Archives Card will be introduced in due course. Alternatively, we will issue you with a Day Ticket for which identification is required.
Please bring proof of your name and current address and signature. The following forms of identification are acceptable:
- Driving licence
- Utility bill (current)
- Council Tax bill/Council rent book
- Medical card (with address)
- Bank statement

If providing suitable identification is a problem for you please contact the office using the details below.
We aim to help everyone to use our services and to ensure that lack of identification is not a barrier to access.
For security reasons, bags are not allowed into the searchrooms. Lockers are available (free) for secure storage of your belongings.
