Information on visiting The Record Office from 11th October 2021
Our opening hours have returned to normal, except we are closed 12.30 - 13.30 for cleaning and ventilation. Searchroom capacity has been increased and there is now no need to book. The health and wellbeing of visitors and staff remain our key priority and we continue to encourage social distancing and the wearing of face coverings. Please see 'Visit Us' for more details, including opening hours. We look forward to welcoming back more visitors.
From 6th January 2022, Findmypast will be the only provider giving access to the 1921 census online. Access to the index will be free but full transcriptions and images will only be available via pay-per-view access for the initial period and via a personal account.
The Census will not be immediately available within any public subscription, this includes the Record Office and Leicestershire Libraries.
Searchroom users will still be able to purchase 1921 Census returns like any other user via a personal account only. They will not be able to do this within the Library/Record Office account. (This is to ensure that credit card details cannot be shared or compromised when using public computers).
The census will be available to view for free online by visiting the National Archives in Kew, Manchester Central Library and the National Library of Wales only.
